Evergreen Content
Content that stays relevant and earns affiliate commissions long after it was published.
What is Evergreen Content?
Evergreen content is content that remains relevant, useful, and search-rankable over a long period — because it addresses a topic whose fundamentals do not change quickly — allowing it to generate organic traffic and affiliate commissions continuously rather than only at the time of publication.
Evergreen Content In Practice
Evergreen content is the economic engine of content affiliate marketing. A review of a software tool's affiliate program, written in 2024 and updated annually with current commission rates, will continue attracting search traffic and generating commissions in 2026 and 2027. A news article about a specific product announcement generates traffic for days or weeks and then goes cold. The compounding economics of affiliate marketing — where a one-time content investment produces ongoing income — depend almost entirely on targeting evergreen topics. For affiliate content, the most reliably evergreen formats are product reviews, program reviews, comparison articles, and tutorial content that covers fundamental tool usage. The decay risk: evergreen content requires periodic maintenance. An affiliate program review with stale commission rates, discontinued programs, or outdated pricing will lose rankings to competitors who keep their content current. 'Evergreen' does not mean 'publish and forget' — it means 'the underlying topic stays relevant, so the investment in keeping it current is worthwhile.'
Example of Evergreen Content
A review of the WP Engine affiliate program published in 2023 and updated annually with current commission amounts, cookie window, and promotional tips retains its search ranking and generates commissions in 2026. A news article about WP Engine's Black Friday sale published in November 2024 generates traffic for two to three weeks and then drops from rankings. Both required similar writing effort; the review produces 100× more long-term commission income because its topic — 'is WP Engine's affiliate program worth promoting?' — is searched year-round by affiliates at every stage of their affiliate career.
