Link management becomes a revenue-critical practice as soon as an affiliate site reaches more than 20–30 articles with embedded affiliate links. The primary risk it mitigates is link rot from program migrations: when a merchant moves their affiliate program from one network to another, every raw tracking URL pointing to the old network becomes a dead link delivering traffic to a 404 page. An affiliate who spent two years building content with raw Impact or ShareASale URLs faces hundreds of manual link replacements across dozens of articles. Link management using cloaked /go/ redirects eliminates this exposure: one redirect rule update and every article is simultaneously corrected. Beyond migration risk, effective link management includes a link inventory — a spreadsheet or tool mapping every affiliate link in the site to its current destination, network, and program status — regular link audits to catch silently broken URLs, and monitoring for program status changes (closures, commission reductions, network migrations). Active affiliates should audit link health quarterly at minimum; large portfolios warrant automated link-checking tools running continuously.
