Plugin License

The contractual rights granted to use or distribute a software plugin.

What is Plugin License?

A plugin license is a form of affiliate agreement granting a buyer the right to install, use, and sometimes modify or redistribute a software plugin under specified terms — typically per-site, per-developer, or per-project — as set out in the marketplace's terms of service.

Plugin License In Practice

Plugin marketplaces sell tiered licenses governed by their terms of service. Each license tier is essentially a layer of affiliate software policy: regular for single end-product use, extended for resale or use in commercial products with redistribution rights. Affiliate content must distinguish between license tiers because buyers frequently choose wrong, leading to compliance issues with the affiliate agreement and refunds that reverse commissions.

Example of Plugin License

CodeCanyon sells WordPress plugins with regular licenses ($15-60 typical) for single-site use, and extended licenses (5-10x the price) for SaaS or paid-app use cases where the plugin is redistributed — each tier carries different terms of service obligations.
