Unique Visitor
A deduplicated count of individual people visiting your site — distinct from sessions or page views.
What is Unique Visitor?
A unique visitor is a single individual counted once within a defined period — regardless of how many times they visited, how many pages they viewed, or how many sessions they generated — providing a deduplicated measure of true audience reach.
Unique Visitor In Practice
Unique visitors, sessions, and page views measure different things and tell different stories about an affiliate site's audience. A unique visitor is one person. Sessions count discrete visit periods — one person visiting on three separate days generates three sessions. Page views count individual page loads — one session averaging four pages generates four page views. For affiliate sites, unique visitors set the theoretical maximum audience for any affiliate link on a given page: only people who actually visit can click. Google Analytics 4 uses 'users' as its primary equivalent metric to unique visitors. The distinction matters for conversion rate benchmarking: a page with 5,000 monthly sessions but 4,200 unique visitors (meaning many people visit more than once) has a different real conversion denominator than one where sessions and unique visitors are roughly equal. An affiliate site's unique visitor count is the most accurate measure of its real audience size for income projection purposes: if 4,200 unique people see a page in a month with a 3% affiliate link click rate, approximately 126 people will click — regardless of how many sessions or page views the page generates. Unique visitors are less commonly reported in affiliate network dashboards (which instead report unique clicks at the link level) and more commonly used in site-level analytics and audience-to-brand pitch contexts.
Example of Unique Visitor
An affiliate's SaaS review hub receives 12,400 sessions in a month, 9,800 unique visitors, and 38,200 page views. The unique visitor count (9,800) is the accurate audience size: 9,800 distinct people engaged with the content. The 12,400 sessions include return visits from the same people; the 38,200 page views include multiple pages per session. When pitching to a merchant about a custom commission arrangement, the affiliate cites 9,800 monthly unique visitors to the SaaS review section — the figure that accurately represents their audience reach — rather than the more impressive but inflated session or page view counts.
